ASTD-Puget Sound August Chapter Meeting
Human Performance Improvement for HR Managers and Performance Improvement Professionals with Dan Hardin
According to William J. Rothwell in ASTD Models for Human Performance Improvement, human performance improvement is the
• systematic process of discovering and analyzing important human performance gaps,
• planning for future improvements in human performance,
• designing and developing cost-effective and ethically justifiable solutions to close performance gaps,
• implementing the solutions,
• and evaluating the financial and nonfinancial results.
In common sense terms, Dan Hardin will introduce the basics to improving human performance in the workplace, how to classify a performance gap and make recommendations on how an organization can close or eliminate the gap.
During this presentation attendees will investigate the reasons why it is that workers in organizations fail to meet the expectations of their managers. Using scenarios, Dan, with the help of attendees will demonstrate why it is that people don’t do what it is we expect them to do and how the organization can manipulate their behavior to improve performance. We will discuss the below reasons performers normally give when asked why their performance didn’t meet expectations.
• I don’t know how to do that, or
• I can’t do that, or
• I didn’t know you wanted me to do that, or
• I don’t want to do it.
After classifying various reasons for performance gaps, we will work together to construct a model that can be used to identify various types of performance gaps and then recommend solutions that have the greatest leverage to close or eliminate the performance gaps for the least cost to the organization. The goal is to present a systematic method for evaluating performance gaps and recommending solutions. This is the heart of Rothwell’s definition of the human performance improvement process.
As a summary, Dan will discuss why the US Coast Guard adopted Human Performance Technology back in the early 1980s and how that decision continues to enable a work force, smaller in numbers to the New York City Police Department, to operate seamlessly not only on a national but a global scale.
No complex flow charts to bore you to death, just straight forward common sense strategies for improving performance in the work place.
I promise you, you will look at performance management in a whole new way.
