Event Details

We would like to invite members to join us for this highly acclaimed play at the Young Vic.

The summer of 1945. A small town in Georgia. Tomboy Frankie shares her crazy dreams with her worldly wise maid Berenice. Desperate to be part of the sophisticated life of her newly-married brother, she schemes to leave home as a ‘member’ of his wedding.

Originally written in 1946, Carson McCullers adapted her novel for the stage in 1950 where it quickly became the hit of the Broadway season. The Member of the Wedding has since become an American classic. Beneath its gentle surface, there’s the violence about to rock the USA. And there’s a young girl struggling to become a woman - and a woman watching the good time of her life slip by.

A great writer of the Deep South, McCullers wrote this remarkable play and a string of timeless best-sellers including The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and The Ballad of the Sad Café.

In the first London production for many years, Berenice will be played by Portia, a member of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s New York company LAByrinth, Frankie by newcomer Flora Spencer-Longhurst.

Matthew Dunster’s Young Vic hit Love and Money was nominated for an Olivier Award. Robert Innes Hopkins most recent work includes Die Soldaten for the Ruhr Triennale 2006.

Suitable for ages 12 and over
