Working as a Project Manager for a translation company

 

The aim of this course is to provide translators with an understanding of what skills are required from a Project Manager. The course covers all aspects of a typical translation workflow from making a quote to delivering the finished project. It is suitable for would-be PMs and for those who wish to work as self-employed translators, regardless whether they work for agencies or for direct clients. At the end of the course, you will be able to:


1. Generate a precise and acceptable quote;
2. Understand the main concepts of translation workflow management;
3. Implement your own checklist of tasks that need to be completed throughout the various phases of a project;
4. Understand the basic concepts of document management;
5. Understand how to keep a small file-based system for managing your own projects and how to keep records;
6. Know where to look for further help.

 

COURSE OUTLINE


Understanding document formats: This section addresses important issues regarding different document formats, problems, solutions, and workarounds.
Getting the quote right: This section addresses common issues when preparing quotes, for instance:


Preparing the project: This section gives an overview of the ideal preparation of the project prior to translation.
Checking the translation: This section provides guidelines on how to proofread and check the final layout and format of the translation.
The aftermath: This section explains the actions following the completion of a translation project File-based system for Project Management: This section provides a sample system for keeping track of projects, deadlines, translators, etc.
File-based record keeping system: This section provides examples of how to keep records of invoices sent, received, paid, expenses, etc.
No translator is an island: This section provides tips on how to look for help in case of problems, acquire further expertise, forums, websites, training, teaming up with other translators, etc. Exercises: At the end of the course, the participants are given a simple individual exercise
and then work in groups, do some exercises and give a simple presentation at the end.

 

BIOGRAPHY:  Roberto has worked at Star Group (Italian, Swiss and Spanish branches) for almost 5 years as a Project Manager and now trains clients and translators in using Star CAT tool, as well as training junior translators, and presenting regularly at conferences. He also provides general and specific IT training.
