Come join the festivities on August 7, 2010 as part of the Coast Guard's 220th Birthday Celebration when the City of Portsmouth, the Tidewater Bicycle Association, and Team Portsmouth Cycling proudly sponsor the First Annual Coast Guard Century.  This ride features Half, Metric and English Century routes, along with self-guided waterfront tours - 10, 31, 50, 65 and 100 mile distances!
 
Enjoy up to four unique loops that will lead riders past numerous historic vistas and landmarks. Here are links and loop lengths with descriptions:

Loop 1 - 31 & 50 Miles (half century - metric and english) - Departs and returns to Ntelos, and follows quite, very low traffic roads with breathtaking waterfront views in Olde Towne, the 164 overpass, Coast Guard Station with ships, old TCC campus near the Monitor Merrimac tunnel, Harborview (in Suffolk), Craney Island, Riverpoint, Scott's Creek and Crawford Parkway. 4 rest stops with full SAG support. The 31 mile route turns around at Hoffler Creek.
Loop 2 - 15 Miles (completes metric century distance with loop 1) - Departs and returns to Ntelos, and follows quite, very low traffic roads with views of the Railroad Museum of Virginia, the oldest Shipyard in the US (Norfolk Navy Shipyard), Bide-a-Wee Golf course, the new TCC campus, Lake Forest and Gosport Park. 1 rest stop with full SAG support.
Loop 3 - 35 Miles (full english century when added to loop 1 & 2) - Departs and returns to Ntelos, and follows quite, very scenic residential waterfront routes, including Olde Towne, Parkview, Shea Terrace, Port Norfolk, Merrimac Point, Glenshellah, Riverside, Churchland Bridge Overlooking the Elizabeth River, Hatton Point, Sterling Cove, Green Acres, and City Park. 3 rest stops with full SAG support.
Historic Waterfront Leisure Route - Departs and returns to Ntelos, and follows quite, very scenic residential waterfront routes, including Olde Towne, Parkview, Shea Terrace, Port Norfolk, and Scott's Creek. 1 rest stop with full SAG support.

 
Just like the Tour de France finish in Paris, the 100-mile English century concludes with several laps around historic downtown Portsmouth, full of cheering spectators! Registration includes police support at busy intersections, 
SAG support, cue sheets, road signage, lunch at the Ntelos Pavilion, and rest stops every 10 miles with tasty snacks, porta potties, very cold sport drinks, ice & water for each loop to beat the heat. Commemorative Guard City Century Jersey and T-shirt are available for purchase too,

 

All routes begin at the Portsmouth Ntelos Pavilion with check-in registration starting at 6:00 a.m. The 3 long distance waterfront routes and 1 short touring route, each built as loops returning to Ntelos Pavilion, along with weekly updates about this ride can be found at http://cycleclassicsva.tripod.com/id21.htm

  • 31 & 50 Mile Half-Century Leaves at 8:00 am
