Big River celebrates New Orlean’s unique culture and music featuring some of today’s most talented jazz artists with deep roots in the music of the Big Easy. Originally organized as a fundraiser by pianist and music director, Peter Martin in St. Louis, the Big River concert successfully showcases the musicians in varied combinations including solo piano, duo pianos, quartet, quintet drawing upon New Orleans repertoire from Jelly Roll Morton to the present day.
Performing...in various combinations ranging from solo piano and piano duos to trios, quartets, quintets and an all-inclusive final jam session all the artists seemed to tap into the indefinable essence of New Orleans music and to communicate that magic to each other and the audience. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
Exuberant parade music and raunchy blues tunes, rowdy street marches and sweet jazz nocturnes attested to the enduring power of the music of New Orleans.... (Chicago Tribune)
Featuring Ellis Marsalis (piano), Don Vappie (banjo), Jeremy Davenport (vocals), Peter Martin (piano), Herlin Riley (drums) Reginald Veal (bass), and Victor Goines (saxophone). Presented in partnership with the Contemporary Arts Center.
