LiveTalk@CPS - Dr. Arlene Blum

Breaking Trail: Mountains, Molecules, and Motherhood

As a mountaineer, Arlene Blum has played a leading role in over 20 major expeditions worldwide, famously leading the first American (all women’s) ascent of Annapurna, as well as the first women’s ascent of Mt. McKinley. For these exploits the Society of Women Geographers awarded her their Gold Medal, adding her to an elite group that includes Amelia Earhart, Margaret Mead and Louise Leakey.

Also a highly regarded biophysical chemist, Arlene conducted the basic research that led to the federal ban on Tris and Fyrol, two cancer-causing agents that had been used as flame retardants in children’s sleepwear. She continues work in this area in order to provide the scientific basis for regulating other dangerous chemicals affecting our health and environment.

Her newest book is Breaking Trail: A Climbing Life, an account of the trails she’s pioneered in both mountaineering and science.

Sponsored by the Fish Wilson Team of Merrill Lynch financial advisors.
