Event Details

Who needs to leave town to experience another culture? Here in LA you can spend time in another country without leaving the city limits! On Sunday, May 30th, we'll be traveling to Mexico for the evening, starting off by partaking of drinks and appetizers at the very heart of where El Pueblo Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula (ie, Los Angeles) was founded. After an hour or so at the El Paseo Inn on Olvera Street, you will then get to bond with your fellow HLAers as we carpool two miles to our next destination: a Lucha Lords Mexican Wrestling match!  :)

Lucha Libre translates literally into "free wrestling" or "free fighting" and is a term used to describe all forms of professional wrestling in most Spanish-speaking countries. Mexican wrestling is characterized by rapid sequences of holds, moves, and aerial stunts... and an impressive array of creative costumes and masks. Prior to the event we will be explaining the rules of the sport so you can fully appreciate what's going on. Unlike some other high profile lucha shows in Los Angeles, there will be no hipster burlesque here... just pure International Mexican Wrestling as it's seen in Mexico.

If you've never seen lucha libre live, you're in for a crazy treat... it's a LOT of kitschy, cheesy fun and although this show is not conducted in English you definitely don't need to speak Spanish to enjoy yourself or understand what's going on. It's like watching a Mexican soap opera while on vacation... a Mexican soap opera featuring a lot of body slamming, hair pulling, and crazy spandex costumes.

The Lucha Lords matches should be over by 10pm. If you need to leave before 10pm, we just request that you be sure to arrange your carpool arrangements accordingly with the other attendees.
