Noted sports photographer Dave Black joins ASMP San Diego for a presentation recapping his career highlights as a freelance photographer, including Olympic coverage selects from 12 Olympic Games. Dave will address lighting including Small Flash, Arena Sport Strobes and Lightpainting. The second portion of the presentation will center on recent projects: Ice Climbing in Ouray, a travel piece in Egypt, and his involvement with National Geographic’s most recent book Where Valor Rests, Arlington National Cemetery in which he made a photographic essay by lightpainting Arlington at night.
As a freelance photographer for over 27 years Dave’s work has primarily centered on the sports industry for such publications as Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek and the award winning TV show Sports Century on ESPN. The list of event coverage includes the Masters, Kentucky Derby, National Football League, NASCAR and extensive work regarding the United States Olympic Committee. Commercial clients include CocaCola, Xerox, Chevy, Hallmark and Nikon. Publishers Dave has worked with include National Geographic Books, Simon and Schuster, Bantam Double Day and Hyperion. Dave Black has been a member of ASMP since beginning his freelance photography career in 1981.
Dave has been a teacher and guest lecturer on photography since 1986 at numerous workshops including Rich Clarkson’s Photography at the Summit and Sports Photography Workshops and with American PHOTO magazine’s Mentor series of international workshops. He is one of Nikon’s “Legends Behind the Lens” photographers and is closely involved with the next generation of photojournalists by teaching and lecturing at Colleges and Universities each year. His monthly website tutorial pages “Workshop at the Ranch” and “On the Road” attract more than 100,000 unique visitors monthly. This event will be held at the San Diego Hall Of Champions sports museum, 2131 Pan American Plz, San Diego CA 92101. Registration and check-in will be at 6:30pm with the program beginning promptly at 7:00pm. ASMP members are $10 if pre-registered, non-members are $15. Students my pre-register for $10. There will be an additional $5 charge for registering at the door.
