Come and geek out with us at the next Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinner at EAT! Bistro in Aqua Books on April 13, 2010, starting at 6:00 PM. Everyone is invited; enthusiasts, students, professionals, young and old. Guys are invited too; the rule of thumb is to be invited by another girl attending. Admission is free, but you pay for your own food and drinks (excellently priced and delicious). There will be some door prizes drawn courtesy of Microsoft.

This Month's Topic: Social Media

The tools of social media are multiplying every day: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, FriendFeed, blogging, StumbleUpon, Google Apps... But behind them all is the idea of interacting with others for a variety of purposes in your professional and personal lives.

Liz Hover and Polly Washburn will present an overview and demonstration of some of the current tools for engaging with others in the digital world, and answer your questions. To attempt to tailor this ever-changing topic to meet the needs of their audience, Polly and Liz would like you to put the "interactive" into "media" via a short web survey:

The presenters:

Liz moved to Winnipeg from London seven years ago. She works as digital media manager for the National Screen Institute - a film and television training school. She authors two blogs: Diary of a Web Gal and Hi, I'm Sadie Shih Tzu (nominated for a Canadian Weblog Award). Liz has presented workshops about the social web for the National Screen Institute, On Screen Manitoba, Canadian Women in Communications, the National Film Board and more. She also does web consulting to help develop and improve websites. Her passion is the internet and how to best use it as a communications professional.

Polly moved to Winnipeg from New York over 10 years ago. She is a film and digital media producer, owner of the production and consulting company Positron Media. She provides consulting and training in the areas of production and web marketing. She is currently producing three feature films, a couple of short ones, a collaborative online digital media project, an iPhone app and an augmented reality game. She has just launched a new blog ScreenLiving to examine content creation and distribution in a world where screens are both converging and proliferating.
