Abstract:

Down-hole flow profiles derived from fiber optics distributed temperature sensing (DTS) are gaining acceptance as an alternative technology to conventional production logging in oil and gas production wells and long-term injection wells, especially if conventional tools access to the injection zone is impaired by well completion geometry, flow conditions or economical constraints. Other important and unique application is real-time monitoring of stimulation treatments.
This presentation includes a brief description off DTS technology, the different configurations of fiber deployment, the data acquisition process and the data visualization options for qualitative analysis. The quantitative analysis methods to convert the DTS data, down-hole pressure sensors and surface rate data into down-hole flow rate distributions are presented with real examples of: producing oil and gas wells; long-term steam and water injection in vertical, deviated and horizontal wells. Comparisons with PLT / Radioactive Tracer surveys are also included.
DTS applications in real-time monitoring of well stimulation treatments, as acidizing and hydraulic stimulation, in single and complex completions are presented with real cases, including flow-back and production periods.  Finally, a smart well application for a SAGD injector monitoring is also presented.

Biography:

Jose Sierra is currently Senior Global Advisor for Reservoir Performance Monitoring at Halliburton/WellDynamics, Houston, TX. He has over 38 years of experience in the oil industry: 20 years with Petroperú as geologist, well-log analyst, reservoir engineer and multidisciplinary team leader for reservoir management projects; 18 years with Halliburton providing technical support and helping the transfer of new technologies, leading worldwide projects in well evaluation, well testing, production enhancement and reservoir monitoring. He has developed techniques and software to analyze data from well-logs, well-tests, production history, hydraulic fracturing, permanent monitoring and DTS. Jose holds a BS in Geology, is member of SPE, AAPG, has authored several SPE papers, holds patents on reservoir monitoring, well testing and stimulation and teaches courses on the above disciplines.
