Event Details

Vancouver's David Hatfield brings together men's work, community leadership and a keen understanding of the complex worlds of activism and changemaking to explore the questions of power, gender dynamics, and what it means to be a man making change today.

This event is for men involved in any capacity in activism and/or community leadership.

We will explore the dynamic terrain walked by men in activist and leadership roles.

It’s no secret that more women than men are found in activist circles. Many male activists struggle to voice their concerns or questions about men’s experiences, feeling there is no real ground to stand upon that welcomes critical and compassionate thinking about men.

We’ll explore these questions:

* Why are less men than women drawn to social activism work?

* What can be done to invite more men to get involved?

* Where do men themselves and men’s issues fit into activism at this moment in culture?

* How can male activist effectively explore gender perspectives when there has been no systemic men’s movement and men’s studies don’t functionally exist?

* Why are 'masculinity' and 'patriarchy' often used interchangeably

* What are the common struggles with have with men in activist circles - and what can we do about it so that everyone wins?

* How can men not only be better allies to women - but to other men as well?

* What are the unique gifts that men bring to making change - and how can these be offered to the world powerfully, graciously and kindly.

* What are the keys places where men making change struggle?
