This LEED Certified Gold building represents phase one of the Sanford-Burnham Institute’s expansion to the East Coast from California, through a partnership with the State of Florida and developer Lake Nona Boggy Creek. The facility will house areas for research on cancer, neuroscience, aging and infectious and inflammatory diseases, including chemistry and biological laboratory spaces, as well as vivaria facilities to support the research.

The chapter thanks our partner in education, IFMA, for this event.  Click Here for more information about the International Facility Management Association.

Admission is $25 for USGBC Central Florida Chapter & IFMA members and $35 for non-members/guests.  Capacity is limited to 100 guests, click here to RSVP.  Complimentary Hors d'Ouvers are provided and a Cash Bar will be available.

More about the Building:

The LEED Certified Gold building is composed as two parallel wings that are oriented to maximize exterior glazing exposure toward the North and South, whose solar heat gain is substantially easier to control.  The North wing is dedicated to administration, lecture and public spaces, while the South wing is dedicated to the research laboratories and vivarium.  These two wings are connected by a two-story, central connector space.  Within all wings, there are various spaces for gathering and interaction among the occupants.

The overall architectural parti and orientation has helped to dramatically reduce heat gain through the exterior walls, while allowing the design team to take advantage of ample daylight available in Orlando.  The building interior design as a whole employs glazed longitudinal (East-West) walls to allow for North and South views to interior corridors.

Outside, the site employs several design strategies to enhance the local environment.  Two large bio-swales surround the site, receiving storm water runoff and reducing its suspended solids before it infiltrates into the soil.  The landscaping design employs as a majority plant species that are either adaptive or native to the site, helping achieve a projected 50% reduction in tot

Energy recovery, substantial reduction in process water use, steam condensate and rainwater recapture, cutting-edge sputtered low-e coating on exterior glazing and responsible choice of all interior finishes materials are some of the other strategies employed in this project.  The LEED Gold Certified building will serve as an example and a catalyst for future green building in the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute at Lake Nona Campus.
