Abstract:

Whiting's entry into the Bakken began with a very modest lease position in the Elm Coulee field in Montana that was quickly drilled-up. When the geo-technical staff was tasked to "find another Elm Coulee in the Williston" the team pointed to a lightly drilled area on the Eastern side of the basin in Montrail County, North Dakota.  Whiting assembled a 119,530 (gross, 69,643 net) acre lease position in what is now known as Sanish Field, and along the way picked up 18,365 net acres in the Parshall Field.  Whiting experimented with several different horizontal well layouts and completion techniques to arrive at an acceptable well design.  The rest, as they say is history.  As of February 22, Whiting has participated in over 200 wells in Parshall and Sanish fields and net production exceeds 21,000 BOE per day.
