Description

Disaster Instructor Specialty Training

This learning experience consists of a series of brief presentations and interactive discussions focused on the instructional techniques, course structure and delivery methods required to meet the diverse learning needs of participants attending disaster courses. Instructor candidates will enhance their skills through practice teaching in a model classroom environment with feedback and coaching provided by qualified DIST instructors.

(DIST) is an instructor-led course designed to enhance and refine the presentation skills of instructor candidates for basic level disaster courses.

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to prepare knowledgeable and experienced Disaster Services workers to teach basic-level disaster courses.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this course, participants will be able to—

Identify the teaching methods used in training settings and explain how each can be most successful.

Interpret and instruct from the design of Disaster Services courses.

Explain the role of the Disaster Training System.

Audience

Employees and volunteers and of the Red Cross with disaster relief experience within the Red Cross and a demonstrated ability to work effectively in group settings.

Prerequisites

 

Fundamentals of Instruction and Facilitation (ARC 3090-1, Rev. 10/98, self-study)

 Operational knowledge and experience in the subject of the course the candidate intends to teach to convey the concepts, principles and procedures.

Completion of the basic course that the candidate intends to teach.

Length

This is a two-day course, including lunches and breaks. Attendance of the entire course is required to earn a course certificate.

Scheduling

The recommended class size is a minimum of eight and a maximum of sixteen participants. It is at the discretion of sponsoring units to offer the course to more than sixteen participants.

Instructor Requirements

A team of two authorized, advanced disaster instructors teaches this advanced-level course. Instructors must be familiar with current disaster regulations and procedures, and agreements made by the Red Cross with other agencies that provide disaster relief.
