The Los Angeles chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its successful series of monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with another special Film Financing Townhall in Hollywood. Our friends at The Los Angeles Film School are again hosting us at their state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of the city, conveniently located near the corner of Sunset & Vine.
This "grassroots" community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attending professionals and to provide unbiased insight & education about the business of film (and film financing in particular). The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to welcome real-world financiers among our guests for the evening!

1) Clint Kisker (topic): Clint Kisker is a member of the senior management team at Screen Capital International, a specialist in media finance, engaged in structured finance, advisory and lending for traditional and new media, with particular expertise in motion picture finance. SCI and its partner companies are the largest market-makers in the business of buying and selling domestic tax credits as well as being a leader in secured lending to both independent film makers and major studios. Since its founding nearly ten years ago, Screen Capital has completed transactions in excess of $7 billion. Clint oversees new business development, debt capital markets and portfolio investments. Immediately prior to joining SCI, Clint advised a National Football League ownership group on a wide range of strategic, financial and operational issues including organizational restructuring and capital management. Previously, Clint served as Chief Financial Officer for Element Films, a subsidiary of Sam Nazarian’s SBE Entertainment Group, where he oversaw day to day operational and financial management of all aspects of the business including sourcing and securing strategic partnerships, and oversight of Element’s $65 million revolving debt facility with Merrill Lynch, which he ultimately helped sell in January of 2009. Before joining Element, Clint served as Director of Finance for Summit Entertainment, where he was responsible for helping to structure individual picture financing for Summit's in-house productions, co-productions, and acquisitions. Pictures made during his tenure at Summit include “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Step Up” and “In the Valley of Elah.” While at Summit, Clint helped structure and close $50 million in equity financing for IDC, Summit's Latin American distribution partner. He also helped structure more than $800 million in debt and equity capital for Summit in a sale/recapitalization transaction lead by Merrill Lynch. Prior to his time at Summit, Clint co-founded and served as COO for an for an online film financing company that was honored as one of the Top Five Business Plans in the Nation by "Industry Standard" magazine, for which he helped raise two rounds of equity capital. Clint has also served as a strategy consultant for Ernst & Young, LLP in New York specializing in creating and overseeing the implementation of market entry strategies for Fortune 500 firms, and worked with Motorola Inc.'s Strategic Alliances Group in developing partnership, merger and acquisitions initiatives in China. Clint holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University and also attended Beijing University in China. »
2) Bill Sutman (topic): Bill Sutman is one of the most heralded and respected finance executives in the industry today, serving as Chief Financial Officer for media capital powerhouse Relativity Media, where he oversees all fiscal reporting and analysis. Bill joined Relativity in January 2009 as their CFO with more than fifteen years of experience in the Entertainment Industry and twenty five years of finance and operating experience. Prior to joining Relativity, Bill was most recently Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the Media Works Group of NBC Universal. Media Works was responsible for the NBC Television Broadcast and Network Operations, Universal Studios Film and Television Production/Post Production Operations and NBC Universal’s Digital and Information Technology. From 2002 – 2004, Bill was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Universal Pictures, where he led the execution of Universal’s Film Securitization and the company’s integration with NBC, among other activities. From 2001 – 2002, Bill was based in Paris, France where he served as Executive Vice President, Finance for the TV and Film Division of Vivendi Universal following Vivendi’s acquisition of Universal Studios. From 1997 - 2001 he held various financial positions of increasing responsibilities within Universal Studios and Universal Pictures and played a key role in the financial activities related to the USA Networks transactions and the integration of PolyGram Music and subsequent restructuring of the Universal Music Group. Bill started his professional career in 1983 in the New York office of Price Waterhouse where he served multinational clients in several industries, and in 1992 he joined Joseph E. Seagram & Sons where he served as Director, European Treasury Operations and Vice President, Internal Audit. Bill received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Economics from Lehigh University and is a Certified Public Accountant. »
3) Matt Thompson (topic): Matt Thompson is a partner at entertainment law powerhouse Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, where he is currently one of the most well-known and trusted transactional and finance law attorneys practicing today. At Stroock, Matt engages in a wide-ranging transactional entertainment practice representing studios, networks, financial institutions, equity investors, radio syndication companies, completion guarantors, distributors, sales agents, producers, directors, writers, and actors. Some of his more recent clients include film fund powerhouse Aramid Entertainment, a bridge and gap financier, on a number of its slate and single-picture loans, Sydney Kimmel Entertainment, and Premiere Radio Networks in their successful negotiations with Glenn Beck to renew his long-term deal with the network. Matt is also a frequent lecturer on various entertainment issues, and is the co-chair of the UCLA Entertainment Symposium Advisory Committee. Matt received his JD from the Hastings College of Law of the University of California in 1991, and his BA from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1988. »
4) Joseph Cohen (topic): Joseph Cohen is a highly sought after entertainment finance luminary with decades of experience in film and investment banking. He has held senior positions in many of the world's most revered and respected investment banks, including N.M. Rothschild & Sons, Ltd., Salomon Brothers, Lehman Brothers, Orion Royal Bank, Ltd. and Samuel Montagu Inc. Most recently, Joe is the President of American Entertainment Investors, Inc., a media financing and consulting firm he started in 1996, and a principal of EFS Advisors, LLC, an entertainment and investment fund, which he started in June 2006. With these companies and independently, Joe has invested in successful films like Academy Award sensation “The Hurt Locker,” and “Masked And Anonymous,” with Academy Award Winner Jeff Bridges, Bob Dylan, and John Goodman. In 1993, Joe completed a four year term as President and Chief Operating Officer of Largo Entertainment, where they produced, under his tenure, several major box office hits including “Point Break,” “Unlawful Entry,” and “Timecop” as well as the critically acclaimed film “Malcolm X,” which it co-financed with Warner Bros. Joe's involvement in the motion picture industry began in the UK in 1980, where he pioneered the use of tax based lease financing for feature films, financing, with partners, over £400 million of UK-qualified production. In 1996, prior to AEI, Joe was instrumental in the creation of Alcon Entertainment, one of the industry's most well-known and popular financing houses, responsible for Best Picture Nominee “The Blind Side,” and box office smash hit, “The Book of Eli.” As an investment banker, Joe worked at international finance powerhouses in the global atmosphere, specializing in leveraged buyouts, municipal bond issues, and debt/equity fortifications with companies like Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb and Orion Bank Limited, managing portfolios in excess of $1.5 billion. Joe is also a frequent speaker at the American Film Market, Wertheim Schroder/Variety Seminar, Paul Kagan Seminars, the L.A. County Bar Association, UCLA, Cinetex, Festival of Festivals, and other organizations in the entertainment business, and has published many articles in the field. Joe is also an adjunct professor in The Peter Stark Producing Program at USC and is a member of the Board of Governors of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. Joe is a graduate of both Yale and Oxford. »
5) Nadine DeBarros (topic): Nadine DeBarros is currently the VP of sales and acquisitions of Voltage Pictures, a premier sales agency, which she co-founded with global sales expert Nicolas Chartier, where she worked on hits like Best Picture Academy Award Winner “The Hurt Locker” and “Mutant Chronicles,” with Ron Perlman, Thomas Jane, and John Malkovich. Other films she's worked and/or acquired include “Bride of Chucky,” “Another Day In Paradise,” and upcoming films “Good Doctor,” “Faces In The Crowd,” with Milla Jovovich, and “Whistleblower,” with Rachel Weisz and Monica Bellucci. Prior to Voltage, Nadine worked in the marketing department of Summit Pictures, and in the sales departments of Crystal Sky Worldwide and Dream Entertainment, where she worked on acquiring and selling independent low budget movies, including successfully negotiating the rights to Alex Steyermark's directorial debut, “Prey For Rock N' Roll,” with Gina Gershon. »
6) Brian Stearns (topic): Brian Stearns is a seasoned entertainment banker with film finance pillar Union Bank, where he provides a wide array of credit services to many of the industry's top studios and film funds, including a recent deal which he worked on for $300 million, committed to Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media. Brian joined Union Bank in 2008 as Vice President of Entertainment Finance, where he is responsible for arranging various types of financing structures on behalf of motion picture producers, distributors and sales companies. He got his start in entertainment banking five years ago, joining French bank Natixis, after having served as sales and marketing director for independent production company, Aura Entertainment, which did “Blind Dating” with Chris Pine of Star Trek fame and Jane Seymour, and “The Big Empty,” with Jon Favreau and Daryl Hannah. Prior to his tenure at Aura, Brian performed in sales, marketing and distribution roles for Shooting Gallery International and Morgan Creek Productions, in addition to freelance work on film, television and commercial productions. Brian is a graduate of Washington State University with a degree in Finance and is fluent in Spanish. »
7) Stuart Ford (topic): Stuart Ford is an internationally traveled and renowned sales expert, currently President and CEO of IM Global, a major international sales and distribution company with offices in Los Angeles and London, which he founded in 2007. The company is one of the most active and high profile film and television sales operations in the worldwide entertainment community and is a prominent presence at the major international film festivals and markets, with sensational hits including “Paranormal Activity,” and “A Single Man,” with Academy Award Nominee Colin Firth. Prior to founding IM Global, in August 2006 Stuart joined First Look Studios as President of First Look International, and prior to First Look Studios, Stuart was a senior executive to Harvey and Bob Weinstein at New York-based Miramax Films from 1997 to 2004. At Miramax, Stuart filled a variety of roles, most prominently as Co-Head of Miramax International, the studio’s powerful international distribution and sales arm. Stuart was also profiled by the Hollywood Reporter in 2004 as one of Hollywood's top executives under the age of forty. Prior to Miramax International, Stuart was Co-Head of the Miramax Acquisitions division, which was responsible for acquiring the best foreign language and independent product for distribution in the US and internationally. During a two and a half year period Stuart’s 18-strong acquisitions team acquired box office and critical hits such as “Amelie,” “City of God,” “Hero,” “Dirty Pretty Things,” “Fahrenheit 911” and “The Station Agent.” Prior to Miramax, Stuart was for six years a successful European based attorney at UK entertainment law firm, Olswang, specializing in film production, financing and distribution. Stuart is a regular speaker and panelist around the world on the subject of international film sales and distribution and independent film financing. Stuart graduated from Oxford with a BA and MA (honors) in Law. »
8) Tyler Pukatch (moderator): Tyler got his start in the film industry as a red-carpet reporter for The Hollywood Reporter. He moved on to stints in public relations before settling with Hero Pictures, a Los Angeles-based start-up production company backed by a high-profile investor from Spain. At Hero, Tyler handles corporate structure, accounting and international taxation, as well as special projects. In addition, he assists the CEO in developing the company's movie production strategy and managing related financial matters. Tyler graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a degree in Legal Studies. »

IIFF and its partner company FilmAngels, the world's first professional angel investor group for independent film, proudly accept all independent film finance proposals, which will be collected by the event's moderator after the panel. There have been a large number of success stories surrounding attendees with ample existing support on their projects securing varying investments for their projects after submitting. Acceptable materials for consideration include: business plans, cash flow analyses, revenue projects, cast attachments, distribution agreements, and letters of intent. Cast is the most important factor, followed by existing funding placements and distribution agreements.
