Event Details

This event is co-sponsored by The Diggs Gallery. Faculty of diverse academic disciplines will be introduced to the essence of mathematics, how it informs the creative process and re-enforces mathematical and analytical thinking.  The workshop will help faculty think creatively about how to integrate critical thinking and quantitative literacy into their general education and upper-division courses. The secondary objective of the workshop is to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and discuss specific tools/techniques to facilitate inter-disciplinary teaching and learning.

The workshop will focus upon key concepts including: visual mathematics, mathematical art and ethno-mathematics. Workshop participants will engage in an interactive session which will ask: “what is mathematics?”, “what is art”, “what are differences and common elements?” The workshop will then follow up with looking at the complex history and connection of mathematics and art from paleolithic times to contemporary work. The workshop will then explore examples in ethno-mathematics, the study of how mathematical ideas are encoded into the material culture.
