Event Details

Finland’s education system has consistently ranked among the best in the world for more than a decade. The puzzle is, why Finland?

Documentary filmmaker, Bob Compton, along with Harvard researcher, Dr. Tony Wagner, decided to find out. The result of their research is captured in a new film, "The Finland Phenomenon: Inside the World’s Most Surprising School System."

IF University is pleased to partner with the Lexington Public Library on a free screening of this award-winning film followed by a discussion led by Anthony Mires, Director of Educational Services at the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation. Dr. Tony Wagner was a featured presenter at the 2012 IdeaFestival in Louisville.

Facilitator: Anthony Mires is Director of Educational Services at KSTC where he manages Kentucky’s pre-AP "Laying the Foundation" training program. He also works with AdvanceKentucky to accelerate access to AP coursework in high school. He leads IF Origins, the introductory level of IdeaFestival® that serves middle school students. He was recognized by the National Math and Science Initiative as an All-American Teacher of the Year for AP Science in 2010.

ABOUT THE FILM: "The Finland Phenomenon" provides an inside look at the world’s finest secondary education system. A life-long educator and author of the best-selling book "The Global Achievement Gap," Dr. Tony Wagner explores and explains Finland’s success. From within classrooms and through interviews with students, teachers, parents, administrators and government officials, Dr. Wagner reveals the surprising factors accounting for Finland’s rank as the #1 education system in the world.
