Tools for Motivating Clients:

Motivational Enhancement Therapy & Stages of Change

3 Hours of Continuing Education credit offered for; LCSW, LMFT, LMHC

Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling - CE Provider # 50-462 expires 3-31-2011

All participants receive a certificate of completion.

Description:

Although we are in the social services field to help, we are often met with resistance by those we serve. This frequently leads to conflict, stress, and eventually burnout. Using the stages of change to assess the people we work with, and applying motivational enhancement therapy (MET), will allow us to be more effective and avoid some of this frustration. The goal is for us to partner with the people we want to help and make some real changes. In this workshop we will review the stages, the techniques of MET, and we will practice how to implement these tools.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify the stages of change and how they can be implemented
  • Describe the principles of MET
  • List the tools of MET (OARS) and how to implement them
  • Practice assessing clients for their stages of change
  • Practice using MET techniques

Presented by Cary Hopkins Eyles, MA, CAP, who is the Director of Residential Services as DACCO. She has a Masters in Criminology from the University of South Florida and is a certified addictions professional (CAP). She is the Chair of the Hillsborough County Domestic Violence Task Force and Co-chair of the Hillsborough County Co-Occurring Steering Committee. She trains extensively locally (HCDVTF Conference, PACE Center for Girls, DACCO) and has presented at the FADAA statewide conference.
