Embracing the Math Common Core: Clarity, Coherence, and Rigor (Middle School)

This session provides middle school math teachers with an introduction to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, is focused on the content and skills found in the Common Core in the middle grades and serves as a starting point to begin engaging with these Standards. Participants will actively engage in inquiry-based activities that continuously highlight the increased FOCUS, COHERENCE, CLARITY and RIGOR of the Standards impacting classroom instruction and assessment. These activities will lead to deeper understanding of: how the new Standards provide greater focus at each grade level using Critical Areas to discuss connections; how domains and clusters are organized to bring coherence to math instruction; how the increased clarity of the Standards may impact teaching and learning; and how Content Standards connect with the Standards for Mathematical Practice and form the basis of a rigorous curriculum.
