For a youth theatre experience far from the typical, check out Portland Theatre Brigade! This competent, diverse and dynamic crew of 7 to 15 year olds deliver a live theatre experience unlike any other in town.  This show they will once again reprise their outstanding rendition of the Ghanan folk tail Anansi and the First Story with its rousing African drum and dance number, preceded by three global stories hailing from Italy, the Ukraine, and from the American South.

Anansi and the First Story – From Ghana

Anansi the spider goes into the realm of the Sky God to claim all the stories of the world.  The Sky God gives Anansi three tasks in order to claim the stories, which are held in a great golden box.  This play includes traditional West African drumming and dancing.

Luba and the Wren – From Ukraine

A young girl from a poor farming family finds a trapped wren in the woods.  Upon freeing it, the wren offers to grant her any wish she desires.  She wants nothing in return, but when she tells her parents, their ambition and greed takes over.

Strega Nona – From Italy

Strega Nona is a Witch who has a magical pasta pot that can make food forever, as long as the secret song is sang correctly.  Big Anthony goes to work for her and sees her using the magic pasta pot without her knowing.  When she leaves, Big Anthony attempts to use the magic pasta pot himself, but runs into trouble when he can’t make it stop.

Rabbit, Fox, and the Milk Fountain – African-American, a Brier Rabbit Tale

Brother Fox has a fabulous Creole restaurant, and his secret ingredient is milk from his milk fountain.  Brother Rabbit tricks his way into the restaurant so he can drink the milk.  A feud develops between Brother Rabbit and Brother Fox as Brother Rabbit drinks more and more of Brother Fox’s milk.
