Steven was born to a father who is a maths lecturer (PHD in Rocketry).  He was taught in Malaysia, New York, Berkely, Sydney, Vancouver, and Perth.  Growing up in UWA’s Maths Department, he began his career at very young age, programming with FORTRAN language on punch cards at 7 years old. He started commercially in tech at 14 year old by importing and repairing Apple 2 clones. Taking up a bachelor of commerce but he pursued a hobby of writing a programme at university as to model and optimize card counting strategies given the local casino rules.  He raised funds to go and play Blackjack. He made money for investors in 6 out of 7 funds.

After graduation, Steven worked in Chartered Accounting and then Stockbroking, before founding Sanford Securities.  He did an amazing work when his CTO (Chief Technology Officer) could not  join him and he did not do any coding within a decade, he went to a bookstore to buy programming books and he wrote over 100,000 lines of codes after 6 months. Subsequently after Sanford Securities, he went to build a few other stockbroking companies.

Aspiring to do a global business and having seen an opportunity with chat for mobile phones, Steven co-founded mig33 with Mei Lin Ng in Australia in December 2005. Mig33 was started with AUD$500K (USD 527K / SGD 658K) in seed funding (which was raised under three hours), mig33 has since raised a total of USD 34M (SGD 42M) and gone on to become a mobile social-networking juggernaut in emerging markets such as Indonesia and India. By far, Steven has participated in or led a few hundred transactions raising several hundred $m (including > $50m for companies he has personally founded and led).  He developed professional and business experience in Australia, Silicon Valley, Asia, Africa and Europe. He also sat on numerous boards and committees for professional organisations, community bodies, corporate boards (private & public companies).
