Part 2: Responsive Web Design

The startup phase of any venture is exhilarating. But who’s talking about how many actually succeed? It's 2012 and designing for the web is no longer what it used to be. The amount of devices with internet access and web-browsing capabilities is growing at an increasing speed. In order to deliver a solid web experience for your users, its essential to design for these varying use cases. Enter responsive web design. In this live stream class, you will learn the basic concepts and tools needed to design and build a mobile-first responsive web experience. Covering topics such as media-queries, progressive enhancement, setting appropriate breakpoints, and establishing a percentage-based grid — this 1-hour session will get you up to speed with the basic understanding you need to get started. Get ready to throw pixels and fixed-width layouts to the wind.

Jon Troutman is the Lead Product Designer at General Assembly.

Part 3: Responsive Web Design vs. Designing for Context

Responsive digital design has become the trendy design request. Building all your sites (mobile, tablet and desktop) off the same code base can be great for efficiency, but it also can blind a product team to game-changing business opportunities. Mobile has a context that your laptop doesn't: it could be with you in a store, as you commute, and on your couch. Learn the power and drawbacks of responsive design and how and when to design for context instead. This class is geared toward digital designers, product owners or channel owners tasked with creating omnichannel digital solutions.

Student Takeaways:

  • What is responsive design, when to use it, and how to design with it in mind
  • Mobile = more, not less
  • The fundamentals of context-driven design and how it changes your feature set and your product
  • 5 ways to tell whether a site should be one-size-fits-all responsive or unique in each channel
