Alexander Isley has designed books, magazines, exhibits, memorial inscriptions, store interiors, packaging, signage, watches, dinner trays, posters, shopping bags, catalogs, restaurants, album covers (remember those?), videos, web sites, billboards, and truck fleets. Most of these incorporate the use of typography in inventive ways. 

2013 marks the 25^th anniversary of the founding of his firm. Join us for an overview of the work produced by Alex and his team of designers, including some rarely-seen treasures from the vault, produced in his early days at M&Co. and Spy magazine.

Included in the show will be examples of the people and things that have influenced Alex over the years, covering a spectrum from Herbert Bayer to MAD magazine. And unlike where other designers might coyly claim homage to or inspiration from these masters, Alex will just come clean, clear his conscience, and lay out for everyone exactly where he’s stolen all of his ideas.

Alexander Isley heads a firm providing identity and communication design for "education, entertainment and enterprise." He serves on the advisory board of AIGA Connecticut and is past president of AIGA New York. Alex has been a critic and lecturer at the Yale School of Art, and has taught courses at The Cooper Union and School of Visual Arts. He first real design job was at M&Co. He then went on to art direct Spy magazine. Alex founded his company in 1988. Alexander Isley’s work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of Modern Art. He is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale, a Chrysler Design Award nominee, a recipient of the Federal Design Achievement Award, and a proud member of the Type Directors Club.
