Event Details

Seven Stories Museum of Childrens’ Literature, alongside CultureLab and the University of Newcastle International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies, would like to present a short exhibition of interactive media art, entitled Movement. This is launched with a free artists talk on Wednesday 27th January 2010, at Seven Stories, Lime Street, Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle.

Made possible through the Collaborative Innovation Partnership between the University and the Museum, via funding from One North East, this exhibition brings three pieces of interactive art to Newcastle, which have not been exhibited together before. All pieces explore alternative ways in which digital media can support embodied experiences, that is, participants who are made aware of their bodies: using their faces, hands and whole bodies across the three pieces of artwork.

The three artworks are Masks from Joel Gethin Lewis, which augments and adds to captured video of a viewer, using generative Baroque art inspired masks. Delicate Boundaries from Chris Sugrue which imagines a space in which the worlds inside our digital devices can move into the physical world. Small bugs made of light, crawl out of the computer screen onto the human bodies that make contact with them. Body Paint from Mehmet (Memo) Atken which explores how whole bodies can be used as brushes with which to paint a virtual canvas, using camera and projection technology.

The three pieces will be present within Seven Stories from Monday January 25th midday through to Friday 26th February. As a very special launch event, the three artists will talk about this and other work at a free talk and presentation event on the evening of Wednesday 27th January, at Seven Stories, from 6pm - doors open at 5.30pm. There will be a chance to tour the museum space and see the three pieces working, and enjoy a drink while hearing the artists talk about the experience of designing digital interactive installations, what motivates them, and their working practices. This will be of interest to anyone with an appreciation of digital art, interactive installations, and the potential for digital media in museums and galleries settings.
