February 12: Susannah Drake, "Resilient Urban Environments"
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the topics of sea level rise and storm surge have never been so relevant. Susannah Drake, the Principal of dlandstudio, will discuss how landscape architecture and good environmental design can create new infrastructure systems that will result in more resilient cities and improved biodiversity. Drake will also argue how data visualization can improve understanding about the financial incentives of good environmental design, and help untangle the bureaucratic web surrounding complex jurisdictional environments.
Susannah C. Drake is the Principal of dlandstudio, an award winning multidisciplinary design firm whose recent public projects include "A New Urban Ground," designed in collaboration with Architectural Research Office for the Museum of Modern Art’s "Rising Currents Exhibit," and the Gowanus Canal Sponge Park, a public open space system designed to absorb and remediate urban storm water. Drake is the recipient of numerous grants for her research on campus landscapes and large scale urban infrastructure projects. She is the former President and Trustee of The New York ASLA, a Trustee of the Van Alen Institute and a visiting studio professor at Syracuse, the Cooper Union, and Harvard University GSD. She is the author of "Elastic Landscape: Seeding Ecology in Public Space & Urban Infrastructure," included in the collection of essays entitledInfrastruktururbanismus, published by DOM publishers Berlin in 2011.

We're pleased to announce details of the SVA MFA Design Criticism Spring 2013 Lecture Series, our ninth series to date. On Tuesday evenings at D-Crit we present lectures by the most thoughtful and provocative writers, editors, designers, and curators practicing today in the interrelated fields of design, architecture and urban planning. Come for the lectures and stay for a chance to mingle with the speakers, D-Crit faculty members, and students.
The Spring series is specially curated and hosted by D-Crit first-year students and reflects their interests and obsessions, which include soft waterfront infrastructure, satire as a critical strategy, game design as a component of urban planning, fashion photography, and longform journalism, among other topics. Join us at D-Crit this semester for lectures by Narratively editor-in-chief Noah Rosenberg; inventor and product designer Markus Kayser; landscape architect Susannah Drake; IDEO’s education director Sandy Speicher; networked-device innovator Kati London; The New Yorker photography critic Vince Aletti; author and columnist Virginia Postrel; and WNYC's "Studio 360" host Kurt Andersen.
Each lecture is followed by a lively Q&A session and refreshments in the D-Crit Reading Room. Lectures are free and open to the public but you do need to register to reserve your space.
