The goal for this one-day program is to help family caregivers to understand the advanced stages of Parkinson's disease (PD) and resources that may be available to help you become better prepared for what the future may hold.

Advanced stages of PD can last from many months to many years.  Intensive, around-the-clock assistance is usually required by this stage. This workshop is expressly for family caregivers providing care for someone who needs help with all or most activities of daily living such as bathing, showering, walking, dressing or eating.

This is your opportunity to become proactive, familiarize yourself with terms and resources, and map out a game plan for the future.  While we understand that a person with PD may want to attend, we must ask that only family members participate in this class.

Select Learning Objectives:

  • Understand physical problems associated with advanced stage PD
  • Identify medications that should be avoided
  • Understand cognitive changes associated with advanced stage PD
  • Identify caregiver stress and strategies to cope
  • Identify advanced care options
  • Learn what legal paperwork should be completed prior to end of life
  • Understand the role of Hopice
  • Identify areas to help maintain quality of life for the person with Parkinson's and caregiver
  • Learn how to prepare for the family meeting and maintain communication with family and friends
