One-Day Regular Guided Autobiography Writing Workshop (March 2013)

Do you want to write your autobiography but don't know where to start?
This one-day Guided Autobiography Workshop is designed to get you situated and kick-start your journey writing your autobiography.
Excellent for both beginning writers and advanced writers, this workshop will help you organize your thoughts and prepare you for the independent writing process.
By RSVPing, you commit to attend THE FULL workshop from 10am to 4:30pm. Please arrive early. An activity for early arrivals is included.
Location: This workshop is in Morningside Heights on West 113th street, near Columbia University. Exact address will be emailed the day before the workshop.
Cost: $75 a person, but if you bring a guest, the total cost for you both is $120 ($15 dollars discount for each of you).
No cell phone use, please. It is vital that our full attention be devoted to listening to each other.
9:30am: Early arrivals can participate in an Intersectional Identity exercise.
10:00am: Group officially begins. Group Discussion - Introductions. Why are you here? What autobiographies have you read?
10:30am: Lecture - What is Guided Autobiography? Difference between a Memoir and Autobiography. Setting of intent / mission statement.
11:00am: Quiet Writing - Branching points, life graph exercise
11:30am: Group Discussion - Sharing our branching points / life graphs. What themes are present in our branching points?
12:00pm: Break for lunch - 45 minutes
12:45pm: Group Discussion - any thoughts come up during lunch about themes?
1:00pm: Lecture and Group Discussion - The Ten Birren Center Themes. Read aloud Family Theme. Suggestions for writing if needed.
1:15pm: Quick and Quiet Writing - Family Theme*
1:30pm: Group Discussion: Writing about Family. Strategies and observations. Read aloud Money Theme.
1:45pm: Quick and Quiet Writing - Money Theme*
2:00pm: Group Discussion: Writing about Money. Strategies and observations. Read aloud Friends Theme.
2:15pm: Quick and Quiet Writing - Friends Theme*
2:30pm: Group Discussion: Writing about Friends. Strategies and observations. Read aloud Work / Career Theme.

Natalie Millman, Personal Historian
Natalie is a trained Guided Autobiography Instructor, trained by USC professors at the Birren Center for Guided Autobiography and Life Review. She is also a member of the Association of Personal Historians and is trained in many disciplines.
Natalie was born in Whittier, Southern California. She received a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in social work from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA. She moved to New York City in 2012 to pursue graduate studies in Social Work at Columbia University School of Social Work; Natalie will graduate with an MSW in Spring 2014.
Natalie currently works with the homeless in NYC. Natalie also leads a free Guided Autobiography group on Meetup.Com: The Manhattan Guided Autobiography Group.
When she’s not studying or working with client personal history projects through her business, Your Story, Your Way LLC, Natalie works on creative writing projects, practices classical piano and viola, attends lectures and conferences on psychology and narrative studies, and reads books on psychology and narrative studies. She is deeply engaged in social justice efforts, including those related to older adults, children, the homeless, and the arts.
Natalie began to develop an interest in personal life stories in her childhood. Engaging in meaningful relationships with her teachers and her elders has always been important to her. Fascinated by human nature and psychology, Natalie has pursued hundreds of hours of extracurricular non-degree-related training, attending continuing-education-level seminars at the Carl Jung Institute of Los Angeles, the Asheville Jung Institute (online), and Pacifica Graduate Institute, among other institutions. Her creative approach to social justice efforts have won her acclaim from organizations such as KABC7 News, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, and other institutions.
Natalie offers a well-rounded educational background and a breadth of experience that shows that she observes essential social work values including service, social justice, human dignity, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. When she manages projects, she is known for competence, creativity, thoughtfulness, receptiveness to constructive criticism, and attention to detail. She strives to ‘lift others up’ for the common good, both in the workplace and in personal life. Love for humanity and compassion are her guiding principles.
