Event Details
January's Community Cinema film is The Powerbroker. The documentary explores the life and work of the controversial civil rights leader Whitney Young. During the 1950s and 60s, Young navigated a divided society. He challenged America’s white business and political leaders directly, but his efforts to open the doors for equal opportunity were often attacked by Black Americans who felt his methods were in contrast with the Black Power Movement of the time.
After the film, we'll discuss local, black empowerment intiatives with The Urban League of Greater Kansas City, which focuses their efforts on education; employment; race relations; and leadership development.
Community Cinema is a free monthly screening series presents fascinating documentaries from the Emmy-Award winning PBS series Independent Lens followed by lively discussions that connect films to local organizations and resources. Films are shown from September to June every second Saturday of the month at 11am.
