Rapid Prototyping and Fast UX Research (Livestream from NYC)

Rapid prototyping is the process of quickly mocking-up early draft versions of a product. A good prototype keeps the complexity out! Thereby allowing you to build the most important elements into your project, and receive feedback early on.

In the first part of this class we’ll evaluate the current state of prototyping tools: wireframing, Samantha Warren’s Style Tiles, Keynotopia, and what I call “sketching with code”. Wait, so you’re saying you can create prototypes right in HTML? You betcha.

We’ll use Twitter Bootstrap to rapidly develop our own HTML/CSS prototype. We’ll get familiar with the fundamentals, the scaffolding, and other Twitter Bootstrap elements. In addition, we’ll also incorporate a variety of external assets for images and typography that will broaden our prototyping toolkit.

Fast UX research: Through three short case studies, this talk will demonstrate how UX research can be done with high quality standards, have an enormous effect, be completed quickly, and most importantly, achieved by software engineers without hiring an expert or paying thousands of dollars.

Students will learn how to:

  • Define and plan the user experience
  • Integrate wireframing/prototyping into the product lifecycle
  • Decide the level of fidelity and details of prototypes
  • Test with users
  • Iterate user feedback
  • Move from prototyping to production
