CHILDREN’S HOSPITALS: HOW URBAN SITES INSPIRE INNOVATION

This month’s presentation of the AIA/LA Committee on Architecture in Healthcare will showcase three children’s hospitals designed by ZGF Architects - Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, opened in July 2011, The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, opened in June 2012, and Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, completed in February 2012.

Learn how the existing campus and complex context of each hospital inspired innovations not just in the architecture of the building, but in the flow, operations, functionality, and user experience. Each hospital is a leading example of how generative space can be effectively used to not only improve lives and organizational performance, but they also demonstrate how an innovatively designed caring environment can be used to improve the overall well-being of a broad community.

Presenters:

Stuart Baur, AIA

Stuart Baur, a principal with ZGF, has 17 years of professional experience in the planning, design, and coordination of a variety of complex facilities, including educational, civic, and corporate projects. Over the last four years, he has focused on healthcare projects. Stuart’s leadership and collaborative approach to working with clients and consultants has contributed to the success of every project on which he has worked. A strong supporter of architectural education, Stuart has served as a Design Review jurist and guest lecturer on integrated project delivery and the use of BIM. He has been involved in all aspects of project delivery, from design development through construction documents, and construction administration. His strengths lie in his attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively. Stuart holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Rice University.

Janet Pangman

Janet Pangman, an Associate at ZGF, brings 19 years of experience as a medical planner and project architect responsible for medical planning, programming, space planning, design, and delivery of large and complex healthcare projects. In these hospital and medical facilities, she has had responsibility for the planning, layout, design, and infrastructure coordination, including the integration of medical equipment. Janet has extensive experience and familiarity working with regulatory agencies such as OSHPD throughout the design and construction process for healthcare facilities. She also has a strong background in the documentation of conceptual ideas, and is particularly skilled in providing leadership in the areas of building systems coordination, constructability, and integrating technical requirements. Janet has a Bachelor of Science in Design from Arizona State University, and a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles

Jhiah Chang, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, EDAC

Jhiah Chang has seven years of professional experience serving as medical planner and project architect on large-scale healthcare and civic projects throughout California, Arizona and Philadelphia. She has been involved in all phases of projects, ranging from master planning and programming, to construction documents and administration. She is very knowledgeable in BIM/Revit, having worked as Revit coordinator for over four years on several projects. Her experience has also given her valuable technical experience with OSHPD. Jhiah received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.

Sue Ann Barton, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, EDAC

Sue Ann Barton is a ZGF principal with 30 years of experience in healthcare design. Her portfolio includes hospital campus master plans, children’s hospitals, adult acute care hospitals, medical clinics, and other healthcare-related projects. She brings a national perspective on healthcare design trends, with an emphasis on evidence-based design patient-care environments. Her participation in research with Pebble Project partners inspires and informs her work. She is a registered Architect in Oregon; Evidence-Based Design Accredited and Certified (EDAC) by the Center for Health Design; LEED Accredited Professional, and a member of the American Institute of Architects, American Society for Healthcare Engineering, and the Architects for Health Panel. Sue Ann earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon.
