The network is pleased to announce a three-session NETWORK 609 I.F.L. SCIENCE SEMINAR SERIES FOR ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOLS(grades 5-8). This interactive Professional Development Session will be presented by Sam Spiegel, PhD, Chair, DL Science, Institute for Learning, University of Pittsburgh. This series is comprised of three full-day sessions on the following dates: Friday, January, 18th, Friday, February 15th and Thursday, March 14th. We are requesting that you register two (2) participants per school, of which at least one participant is an instructional lead as identified in Galaxy. · March 14th : Common Core Learning Standards and Writing in Science (part 2): Considering Texts, Tasks, and Talk to Advance Reading, Writing and Sense-making in Science
Times: 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Participants: Two (2) participants per school, of which at least one participant is an Instructional Lead as identified in Galaxy.
Please Note: Unfortunately, we will not be able to provide breakfast or lunch so participants will need to make their own arrangements (or bring their own)–thank you!
Preparation for January 18th: Our focus for the day will be on Common Core Literacy Standard #10 for Reading in Science – Utilizing Complex Text.
·Attached you will find two articles that will serve as background for the day. I would appreciate it if you will find the time to pre-read The Challenge of Challenging Text (4 pages) –and- Publishers’ Criteria for the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Literacy, Grades 3 – 12 (read pages 13 – 17 only).
· In order to make the day most purposeful for you, kindly bring along at least one article / document / data set / book section that you intend to use as informational text in the next few weeks or months. Part of the day will be spent applying the information and strategies learned to your own grade / course / content. This process will also allow you to see the types of documents that others are using. Thank you!
