Stress and anxiety due to loss and transition create unique obstacles to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The workshop will present strategies to assist children and adolescents in out-of-home care in reducing barriers and increasing motivation for physical activity. Topics will include: individual perceptions of physical activity, benefits and barriers, engagement strategies, dealing with resistance, adolescent ownership, and family/community involvement. Participants will learn how to make a wide range of physical activities engaging and fun. Participants will leave with practical ways to motivate and encourage healthy behaviors and lifestyle.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

(1) Understand the importance of healthy movement and physical activity in out-of-home care
(2) Integrate strategies to promote healthy behaviors for children and adolescents
(3) Provide age appropriate guidance on physical activity to children in out-of-home care

Workshop hours will be from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.  Check-in will begin at 8:30am

About the presenter

Jere Gallagher, Ph.D. is the Associate Dean of the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh and an associate professor in the Health and Physical Activity Department. She was the director of Kinder Kinetics Program - a program for children with and without disabilities. She earned her PhD from in Motor Development and Learning and is currently under negotiation on development of a textbook for pre-K to 6th grade teachers on motor development with an emphasis on physical activity.

Andrew Ganucheau, CYC-P is a doctoral student in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. His background includes a master in school counseling and has been involved in bullying prevention for Peoria Schools for three years. He was recently certified as a professional child and youth care worker.
