Tuesday Afternoons: Homer's "Odyssey"
Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 12:30 PM (PST)
Los Alamitos, CA
Homer's Odyssey is the "sequel" to the Iliad. In the Odyssey we follow Odysseus on his 10-year journey home from the Trojan War. In Ithica, Odysseus' kingdom is in shambles. Since he has been "missing in action" for the past 10 years, his wife Penelope doesn't know if he is dead or alive; should she remain faithful to her husband, or should she marry one of the many (obnoxious!) suitors who has moved into the palace and get on with her life? Should his 20-year old son Telemachus (who was an infant when his father left for Troy) assume the kingship and straighten our the kingdom, or should he leave home and search for his father?
On the journey home, Odysseus encounters beautiful women who try to seduce him (and often succeed), monsters who try to devour him (and eat many of his crew), and countless dangers at sea.
We will read Robert Fagel's translation of the Odyssey, the companion to his Iliad, which we have studied previously.
This is a fabulous adventure story, filled with suspense and intrigue. It is Dr. Creasy at his best!
