Science Cafe: The Science of Microbes
Wednesday, February 27, 2013 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM (EST)
Contrary to the popular notion of microbes as harmful agents, a veritable zoo of microbes lives in and on our bodies, helping to digest our food and defend our bodies against pathogens. These microbes are collectively known as the human microbiome. What are these microbes, what are they doing, how do they vary from person to person, and how do they influence health and disease?
This special event commemorates the 150th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as historical research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in 1977 that has helped researchers to identify and classify microbes.
Tickets are $10, or $7 for students, and can be purchased at the door. Food, wine, and beer are included at no charge with admission. This interactive discussion is co-sponsored by the Koshland Science Museum and PNAS.
