A Day of Service for all to honor
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
on Janaury 21 from 9am to 1pm
You are invited to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday by participating in a Day of Service on Monday, January 21, 2013. Youth and adults will gather at the Clarkston Community Center to work on the following projects:
- Project 1 - Rice for Refugees
- Project 2 - Literacy UMC at Clarkston Community Center
- Project 3 - Literacy Clarkston at Avalon Apartments
- Project 4 - Pots, Pans & Flatware for Refugees
- Project 5 - Clean-up Clarkston

Important Information:
This is a free activity open to all who wish to serve. You are not required to bring anything other that your willingness to serve.
The following information may be useful as you plan for your day of service.
- MLK Day of Service begins with our gathering promptly at 9am.
- Individual projects are scheduled for 3-4 hours (estimated completion). All projects should be complete before 2pm.
- Clean Up Clarkston - outdoor community clean up projects could be cancelled if weather is inclement.
About the Projects

Project 1 | Rice for Refugees
With assistance to Clarkston Community Center from Lutheran Services of Georgia, Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta, and ELCA Southeastern Synod

Before you come: Collect bags of rice and bring them with you Larger bags are more economical | Rice will be re-packaged into family-sized bags to be distributed to newly arrived families being resettled by Lutheran Services of Georgia. Admission is free but you are encouraged to contribute rice or pots and pans
o Please collect large bags of rice and bring with you to MLK Lutheran Day of Service. Volunteers will repackage rice into usable packages that will be given to refugee families in the Atlanta area.

Before you come: Collect pots and pans and bring them with you Miscellaneous pots and pans will be boxed up into sets for the apartments of newly-arrived families being resettled by Lutheran Services of Georgia. Admission is free but you are encouraged to contribute rice or pots and pans

Project 5 - CleanUp Clarkston & Avalon Corridor
With assistance to Clarkston Community Center from Clarkston Community Foundation
|
|
Teams of volunteers will go to various sites in the City of Clarkston to complete outdoor projects that includes cleaning, removing, bagging and helping to improve the community. Four team of 15-25 people are planned. These projects will be cancelled if weather is inclement.
