Workshop Description:

In this workshop, Dr. Meichenbaum will discuss the challenges of working with “high-risk" children, adolescents and their families. He will offer a Case Conceptualization Model of risk and protective factors that informs assessment and treatment decision-making.  He will demonstrate how to implement the core psychotherapeutic tasks for working with children and youth who evidence “externalizing” (acting -out behaviors) and “internalizing" problems (anxiety and depression). He will highlight how to establish and maintain therapeutic alliances in a developmentally and culturally sensitive fashion;   how to foster treatment generalization; and ways to build in protective factors. How to implement evidence-based interventions will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

1. Trace the developmental course of children and adolescents who evidence externalizing and internalizing behavior problems and consider the implications for both treatment and prevention

2. Use a Case Conceptualization Model that considers both risk and protective factors that informs assessment and treatment decision-making

3. Employ evidence-based interventions with children, adolescents and their families

4. Build in protective factors with "high -risk" children and their families

Workshop hours will be from 9 am-4 pm (hour lunch on your own).  Sign-in will begin at 8:30 am.

About Dr. Meichenbaum:

Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D, is Distinguished Professor Emeritus  form the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada from which he took early retirement 16 years ago to become the Research Director of the Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention in Miami (see www.melissainstitute.org and www.teachsafeschools.org). He is one of the founders of Cognitive behavior therapy and in a survey of clinicians; he was voted one of the 10 most influential psychotherapists of the 20th century. He has received a Lifetime Achievement award from the Clinical Division of the American Psychological Association and he has presented in all 50 U.S. States   and internationally. He consults to several treatment centers and is the author of many books. His most recent book is “Roadmap to resilience" (see www.roadmaptoresilience.org). His workshops are noted for the combination of scholarship, critical-mindedness, clinical practicality and humor.

Continuing Education:

Meets requirements for 6 hours of CEUs: MFTs, LCSWs, LEPs, LPCCS, CYC-P, RNs, and Psychologist.

This workshop meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs), Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Licensed Educational Psychologists (LEPs), and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs) as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families; Provider 2522).

This workshop meets the qualifications for 6 hours of continuing education credit for Child and Youth Care Professionals (CYC-P) as required by the Child and Youth Care Certification Board. Content domain: Developmental Practices
