At whatever stage you are in the development of your tech company, you run into obstacles and successes. The panel speakers will draw from their own experience to answer the following questions:

1. What were their  trials? And, how did they overcome them?

2. What were their successes? And, how did they achieve various successes?

3. What are the definite don’ts in building a company? What are the definite do’s in building a tech company?

4. When should you start looking for venture capital? What does that process look like?

5. What ingredients must your company have to have to be a venture capital back-able company?

Panel Speakers: Matt Miller, GP at Walden VC and Tom Fountain, Principal at Mayfield Fund.

Matt Miller's Bio:

Matt Miller has 19 years of management experience, including 14 years at Silicon Valley software companies. He has over 8 years of experience as an officer of a public company or CEO of a private company.

Matt joined Walden from Moai Technologies, a Walden portfolio company. As CEO of Moai, Matt helped build revenues to over $14 million and focused the company on enterprise customers. Before Moai, Matt served as Vice President & General Manager at Remedy Corporation, where he managed a division with over $175 million in revenue and 200 employees in Engineering, Marketing, and Business Development. He has also served as Vice President of Marketing at both Remedy and Gupta Corporation and Director of Marketing at Oracle Corporation and Versant Object Technology Corporation. At Oracle, he was a part of the small Desktop division team that developed and launched the first database server running on an Intel chip in 1989. Before coming to Silicon Valley, Matt also held positions in sales and marketing at Warner Lambert and Allied Stores.

Matt is a member of the Board of Directors of H5 Technologies, Ignite Technologies, and Palamida and an observer on the Board of Directors of VitalStream (VSHI.OB). In addition, he is a director of the Portola Valley Schools Foundation.

Matt received his Masters of Business Administration from Columbia University and his Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University.

Tom Fountain's Bio:

Tom Fountain's experience as an entrepreneur and academic shapes his investments in infrastructure software, networking and security as a principal at Mayfield.

Tom's current investments include Akimbi and Webroot. He also works with portfolio companies including Cemaphore, Determina, Elemental Security, Mendocino Software, and Narus.

Prior to joining Mayfield in 2003, Tom was co-founder of Ingrian, a leader in network and database security.

Tom previously served on the faculty of Stanford University in both the electrical engineering and computer science departments. He is the co-inventor of 10 U.S. and four international patent-pending technologies in networking, security and operating systems.

Tom was a Ph.D. student in electrical engineering at Stanford University, where he earned an M.B.A. with distinction as an Arjay Miller Scholar, an M.S. in electrical engineering, an M.S. in computer science, and a B.S. in computer systems engineering.
