We know, we know.  Nobody listens to the radio anymore.  But it's one of the most important inventions of the 20th century, and, more importantly, there's still not a lot that's more amazing than making a well-tuned crystal radio out of a handful of simple electronics components and hearing sounds and voices from the airwaves.  Crystal radios don't even need batteries!

The suggested donation for the workshop is $30.  All of the events, classes, and workshops hosted and run by the Parts and Crafts Collective are free, or operate on a sliding-scale.  Donations greater than the suggested amount are deeply appreciated and help us create our projects and run our programs and allow us to work with people who could not otherwise afford to come to our events.  No one will be turned away based on their lack of ability to pay.

This event is being held at Bug Labs in Manhattan.  Bug Labs designs an open-source hardware development platform and runs a small, open, community workspace called the 'test kitchen'.  Good maker-citizens that they are, they've offered us the use of their space to teach the next generation.

Katie Gradowski writes literary criticism and bakes bread.    After a long flirtation with public radio, she spent last summer with the Prometheus Radio Project learning a little bit about advocacy and democratically run groups.   She's halfway through a doctoral degree (in English) and very excited to help kids create documentary projects of their own.   In her spare time, she teaches writing to freshmen, builds radios out of oatmeal boxes, turns milk into cheese, and fantasizes about making community a workable thing.
