Event Details

This course examines the causes of challenges in the lives of youth in out-of-home care and how to cultivate and develop lasting strengths.  The course includes a critical examination of current theories of cause in child and adolescent challenges as well as how to develop an understanding of how to cultivate strengths despite these difficulties.  In addition it will include an explanation and reshaping of the diagnostic paradigm in order to refocus strategies on bolstering skills for children in out-of-home care.

In this course, you will learn to:

  • Examine current theories of cause, in child and adolescent psycho pathology, and
  • Develop an understanding of how to cultivate strengths despite difficulties
  • Refocus strategies on bolstering skills

About the Instructor:

Dr. Robert Foltz is a licensed clinical psychologist and has over 20 years of experience working with severely troubled youth.  Throughout these years, he has studied what works, and what doesn't work, with this difficult-to-treat group of kids.  His professional experiences include both administrative and clinical responsibilities in the delivery of care to troubled youth.  For many years, Dr. Foltz has studied the benefits and drawbacks of psyhotropic medication with children and adolescents, and how these treatments integrate with psychosocial approaches.  Dr. Foltz is currently an Assistant Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, in their Clinical Psychology, Doctoral Program, in the Child/Adolescent Track.  He maintains a private pratice in Illinois, working primarily with youth suffering from emotional and behavioral difficulties.  He also serves on professional boards examining the effectiveness of care delivered to troubled and troubling youth.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Foster Parents and Group Home Staff: This workshop provides 5 hours of formal on-going training in care and supervison.

Group Home Administrators: Approval pending by the California Department of Social Services for 5 hours of continuing education units for administrator recertification (Vendor GH 1000342-730-2; course number 342-0504-15723)

MFTs and LCSWs: This workshop meets the qualifications for 5 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Provider 2522)

Registered Nurses: Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CEP 15108) for 5 contact hours.

This is a 5 hour course with a 1 hour lunch. (lunch is on your own). Sign in begins at 8:30 am
