About the film:
It's not often that we have an Australian film submitted to the Academy Awards as a contender for Best Foreign Language film, but this year we have Cate Shortland's LORE, a German/Australian co-production. It's set in 1945, the end of World War II. Lore, played beautifully by young Saskia Rosendahl, realises that something is dreadfully amiss when her SS father arrives with a truck to pack up their home to move to a remote location. Abandoned by the father, followed soon after by her obviously stressed mother, Lore is left to fend for her younger sister Liesel - NELE TREBS - and twin brothers as well as the baby Peter. The youngsters are joined on the long journey to their grandmother who lives outside Hamburg by Thomas - KAI MALINA - who claims to be a Jewish survivor of the death camp.
This brave, troubling film is the tale of innocence shattered. Lore is not a particularly sympathetic character, her attitude to Thomas' Jewishness, her lack of charm as she battles to survive, become just part of a painful journey as she absorbs recent history. Shot splendidly by Adam Arkepaw in an impressionistic style, all credit to Shortland for the choices she's made, this film grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go. The performances are universally excellent.
Few films recently have affected me as powerfully as Lore. It's an outstanding achievement from one of our most talented filmmakers.
