Workshop Description:
The rate of change in our organizations and the external environment is staggering and keeping pace with these changes often results in unrelenting stress. When organizations, especially those serving traumatized clients, are confronted with chronic stress they can become trauma organized and begin to exhibit many of the same behaviors presented by distressed clients. This workshop provides an overview of the Sanctuary Model and how trauma theory and recovery applies to organizational development.

Topics to be discussed:
• Applying trauma theory to organizational functioning
• Using the SELF Model (Safety, Emotions, Loss, Future) to assess and manage organizational challenges
• Implementing organizational tools to manage stress
• Establishing and cultivating organizational values and commitments

Presenter:
Brian Farragher LMSW, MBA, Executive Vice president and Chief Operating Officer, Andrus Children’s Center, Yonkers, NY. Brian has 25 years experience in the childhood mental health field. For eight years he has collaborated with Dr. Sandra Bloom and Andrus staff to implement the Sanctuary Model, a trauma-informed system of care. In 2007, Andrus developed the Sanctuary Institute, which offers training and consultation to other organizations seeking to implement the model. Brian has presented at regional, national and international conferences and written articles on developing trauma sensitive treatment programs as well as reducing the use of physical intervention in residential settings. In 2009, Brian received the Samuel Gerson Nordlinger Child Welfare Leadership Award, presented by the Alliance for Children and Families. Brian has published a book with Dr. Bloom “Destroying Sanctuary: The Crisis in Human Service Delivery System.” Their new book, “Restoring Sanctuary,” is scheduled for release in the winter of 2013.
