Event Details

Homelessness and Hunger Awarness Week has a whole week of Service Activities!

Please contact me as soon as possible to sign up for shifts, if you can drive, and for more details if needed!

·         Monday: We will be working in room 406 of the HSC to put together bags of hygienic materials for the PADS shelter in DuPage County.  This event will start at 7:00 pm and if possible, please bring donations. (shampoo, toothbrush, tooth paste, etc.)

·         Tuesday: We will be working with the Salvation Army Church between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.  We will be helping them get ready for their big Christmas drive.  If you are interested, please contact me and I will sign you up for a shift as well as give you directions.

·         Wednesday:  We will be watching a movie that relates to the issue of homelessness and will be watching it in the comfort of our own box.  Not only will we learn a little from the movie, but also from trying to find comfort in a box that many have to use as a home.  During the movie, we are encouraging organizations to bring two sheets of fleece from a fabric store to make a blanket, which will be donated to a shelter.  This event will start at 7:00 pm in the Illinois Room of the HSC.

·         Thursday:  We will be providing an opportunity for students to learn about the issues of hunger and homelessness.  We will be doing so by providing information, advocacy activities, and two speakers.  One of the speakers is a representative from Feeding America and the other is a NIU student, Erik Gilbert, representing Child Initiative International.   This event will start at 7:30 pm in the Capital Room of the HSC.

·         Friday:  We will be allowing one or two members from each student organization to have the opportunity to volunteer with Feed My Starving Children in Aurora, Illinois.  If you would like to send a representative from your organization, please contact me for details.  Those who attend will need to meet in the Campus Life Building at 1:45 pm.  It will end at approximately 6:30 pm.

·         Saturday: We will be working with Habitat for Humanity throughout the day.  There are limited spaces so please contact me for details and to reserve a spot.

Contact: Nikki Walters if you have any questions about events for the entire week! (awalters5@niu.edu or ashleynwalters@yahoo.com)
