User Experience Workshop
Saturday, November 17th from 1 pm - 5:00 pm
Skot Carruth, Aastha Gaur, Brendan Bolton-Klinger, Steffen Hoffman
After the success of the last User Experience Workshop during our kick-off weekend, we're happy to bring another UX focused event to the LA community. This time we'll be including interactive and hands-on exercises to the day's offerings, with a 90 minute session focusing on forms - best practices, case studies, and an opportunity to creatively approach form design on your own. We'll also be examining some less traditional and often underestimated UX topics such as copy writing and coding from a UX perspective.
Join us after the workshop for a free happy hour mixer sponsored by UXTalent!
Schedule
12:30 PM Doors open
1:00 PM Different Approaches to User Experience / Skot Carruth
1:30 PM Writing Copy for UX and Why We Need to Care / Aastha Gaur
2:30 PM Break
2:45 PM Get What You Need From Your Users: Forms / Brendan Bolton-Klinger
4:15 PM The Importance of the Designer/Developer Relationship / Steffen Hoffman
Prerequisites:
None.
Skot Carruth started making websites in 1994, just four years after Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. Skot started his first e-commerce business in 1997, and consulted for small businesses throughout high school and college. After a brief stint in investment banking, he came back to his digital roots to co-found philosophie. He currently heads up User Experience Strategy at philosophie, where he and his team create awesome experiences...and then make them better.
Aastha Gaur is currently a UI/UX Designer at Google AdWords. She works within teams including engineers, copy writers, product managers, and sales reps to ensure that Google builds products that are user-friendly for billions of people worldwide. Before moving to Google, Aastha worked with Yahoo! News getting them (and ABC news) ready for the current election season to compete with other online news destinations. In the past Aastha has also worked for various non-profits to help them fund-raise and market themselves through online channels. Aastha has a B.Des from India, where she majored in Industrial design and an MFA from CalArts in Graphic Design. She also taught at the Art Institute in North Hollywood.
Brendan Bolton-Klinger is currently the Experience Lead at Huge Inc. He specializes in the development of mobile applications and large content sites. In his role at Huge, Brendan has collaborated on the Reuters iPad application as well as its mobile platform and has delivered new communication platforms for clients like Samsung, Comcast, FX Networks, JetBlue, and C Spire Wireless. Prior to joining Huge, Brendan was a Senior Information Architect at EuroRSCG, owning the Volvo, Advair and Claritin accounts. He earned a B.A. from Wesleyan University, taught classes at Pratt University for three years, and earned an M.F.A. from the School of Visual Arts, where he also taught for five years.
Steffen Hoffman is currently the founder of n3rd, a functional beverage company, and Porter, an urban logistics platform. Prior to these ventures, he was the cofounder and designer/developer of the photo sharing company Hipster, which was acquired by AOL in March, 2012. Steffen also ran a web design shop for 2 years before answering his calling in the tumultuous waters of the startup world. He often does UX/UI contracting and consulting for several early stage startups including The Honest Company. Steffen received his B.S. from East Stroudsburg University, although he strongly advocates foregoing higher education to pursue your dreams. In his free time, he can be caught making music, baking, or enjoying a good workout at Muscle Beach in Santa Monica. "A healthy lifestyle makes you a better designer."
