The essence of effective child and youth care practice includes the ability to make use of opportunities available in the moments of daily life to facilitate positive change. This course defines these skills and offers an opportunity to incorporate this approach into your own work with young people. The primary focus is on strengthening reflective practice and thinking systematically about the process and context of our work in a helping relationship.

You’ll review the characteristics of a contemporary Child and Youth Care approach, explore a framework to increase awareness and meaning of daily life events, and learn the four dimensions of intervening into daily life events.

This abbreviated overview of the course provides an introduction to the full course titled “The Therapeutic Use of Daily Life Events”. It is intended to serve as an introduction for organizations interested in exploring how to integrate the training and skills into their program. Other related training topics will be briefly reviewed including suggestions on how to fit this topic within the scope and sequence of an existing program. This session is jointly sponsored by Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families, The Academy for Competent Youth Work, and TransformAction International.

About the facilitator(s)

James Freeman, MA, CYC-P, has been involved in the field of child and youth work for over twenty years. He is the training director at Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families, president of the Child and Youth Care Certification Board, and a senior trainer for TransformAction International.

Andrew Schneider-Muñoz, Ed.D., CYC-P is an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh and the current president of the Association for Child and Youth Care Practice. In addition to over 30 years of direct care work, he previously served as director of the Academy for Educational Development Center for Youth Development where he lead the research and development of strength-based initiatives in more than a dozen countries focused on child and youth care, family engagement, education, and leadership.

Frank Eckels, CYC-P, is the executive director of the Child and Youth Care Worker Certification Institute. He has been and child and youth care practitioner, trainer and advocate of professional practice for over 30 years. His direct care experience has ranged from adventure camps to psychiatric units in the state hospital with emotionally disturbed children to residential programs for children in out-of-home care.
