UT Opportunity Forum's 2012-2013 Gentrification Series

Gentrification by Design: Rhetoric, Communication & the City

February 15, 2013

12:10-1:30 pm

UT doctoral student Kristin Stimpson from the School of Communication will present research focusing on how communications influence the way we view, implement, and negotiate change in the city. The issues of how the city takes shape, who gets to define the city, and who has the right to city spaces all speak to the contested nature of gentrification and its political function. The presentation will center around how our communication about gentrification and city planning warrant our careful attention, as they will help detemine the physical, social, and cultural landscape of our city for decades to come. The presentation will include case studies from City of Austin corridor planning initiatives on East Riverside and 11th and 12th streets.

Presentation followed by a panel discussion.

Panelists:
Professor Elizabeth J. Mueller, UT School of Architecture
Ruby Roa, Low-income tenant advocate and community volunteer
