Abstract:

The Bay Area chapter of the Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) continues its successful series of monthly gatherings at the junction of film & finance with another special Townhall Meeting in San Francisco. Our friends at Academy of Art University are again hosting us at their new facilities in the City's SoMa district, conveniently located just a short stroll from SF Caltrain Station at 4th & King.

This "grassroots" community get-together is designed to foster & inform productive relationships between attending professionals and to provide unbiased insight & education about the business of film (and film financing in particular). The event features a powerful roster of highly topical speakers from the filmmaking and financial industries. We are delighted to once again welcome real-world financiers among our guests for the evening!

IIFF's one-of-a-kind mission is to sustainably expand the scope & appeal of film financing, and to do so for the benefit of the public at large. True to our proven motto of "democratizing film financing," IIFF's regular Townhall Meetings bring together a wide array of professionals from relevant backgrounds in film, finance and beyond for a vibrant evening of insightful presentations and speeches, inspiring discussion and focused networking. Past meetings (e.g.: January '08 Bay Area Townhall in San Francisco, CA, January '08 Los Angeles Townhall in Venice, CA & January '08 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan | December '07 Bay Area Townhall in San Francisco, CA, December '07 Los Angeles Townhall in Santa Monica, CA, December '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan & December '07 New England Townhall in Providence, RI | November '07 Bay Area Townhall in San Francisco, CA & November '07 New England Townhall in Norwalk, CT | October '07 Los Angeles Townhall in Santa Monica, CA, October '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan & October '07 New England Townhall in Boston, MA | September '07 Los Angeles Townhall in Santa Monica, CA & September '07 New England Townhall in Norwalk, CT | August '07 Los Angeles Townhall in Santa Monica, CA & August '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan | July '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan & July '07 Los Angeles Townhall in Santa Monica, CA | June '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan | May '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan & May '07 Bay Area Townhall in Mountain View, CA | April '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan & April '07 Bay Area Townhall in San Francisco, CA | March '07 New England Townhall in Stowe, VT, March '07 Bay Area Townhall in San Rafael, CA & March '07 New York Metro Townhall in Manhattan | February '07 Townhall West in San Francisco, CA & February '07 Townhall East in New York City | January '07 Townhall in Santa Cruz, CA | December '06 Townhall East in New York City & December '06 Townhall West in San Francisco, CA | October '06 Townhall in New York City | September '06 Townhall in Oakland, CA | July '06 Townhall in Palo Alto, CA | June '06 Townhall in San José, CA | May '06 Townhall in San Francisco, CA | April '06 Townhall at Stanford business school) have reliably delivered useful insights into the business of film, provided valuable networking opportunities, and managed to draw large and enthusiastic crowds.

Who should attend? Entrepreneurs, technologists, attorneys, bankers, investment managers, venture capitalists and other non-film professionals are cordially invited to learn more about independent film. Are you considering taking an active role in film or would you like to expand your current involvement? Don't miss this opportunity to connect with the like-minded… Established and aspiring filmmakers are, naturally, more than welcome to join us as well!

The evening's five presentations plus panel discussion will address key issues relevant to filmmakers, financiers, and anyone interested in the economics, business mechanics, and financial dynamics of film. They will be followed by Q&A time. Attendees will also have ample opportunity to interact & network with our distinguished presenters and panelists and amongst themselves.

An informal après-meeting celebration will take place at an area restaurant!

Speaker Bios:

Steven Shainberg (topic): An award-winning writer, producer and director best known for the indie hit "Secretary" (2002), Steven Shainberg has worked all over the film set. After graduating from Yale University with a B.A. in English Literature and East Asian Studies, Shainberg went straight to work behind the scenes on numerous films, commercials and rock videos in a variety of capacities, such as Location Manager, Assistant Director, Production Coordinator, Grip and Assistant Editor. Subsequently, he worked as an independent producer, developing several screenplays, including "Angels" with Denis Johnson ("Jesus' Son") and adaptations of Joseph Conrad's "The Secret Agent" and Henry James' "The Americans." Shainberg then entered the American Film Institute (AFI), where he directed four short films, all of which he wrote or co-wrote. The last of these, "The Prom," starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and J.T. Walsh, won the Grand Prize at the Houston International Film Festival, the Critic's Award at the Breckenridge Festival in Colorado and the Silver Medal for Drama at the New York Festival. After taking his short films around to major festivals, the short-film series "Mr. Viril" was eventually shown in segments on MTV, where it ran for almost six months. At the same time, a video for Debbie Harry, "Strike Me Pink," was also in rotation. In 1998, Shainberg made his feature-film debut with the film noir "Hit Me," based on the novel "A Swell-Looking Babe" by Jim Thompson (who wrote "The Grifters" as well). "Hit Me" was released by Castle Hill to strong critical raves for Elias Koteas' performance as a high-strung loser who gets drawn into a hotel robbery gone awry. It also starred William H. Macy and Laure Marsac, a Cesar Award-winning actress in France. The film screened at numerous festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, the Athens International Film Festival and the Stockholm International Film Festival. Although "Hit Me" did well with festival audiences, Shainberg's breakthrough film came about in 2002 with the dark comedy "Secretary." Adapted by his colleague Erin Cressida Wilson from a short story by Mary Gaitskill, "Secretary" is a controversial yet touching and honest movie starring Maggie Gyllenhaal in her first leading performance. She portrays a disturbed young woman who gets a job as a secretary to a lawyer played by James Spader. The story follows the two characters as they develop a sexual, sadomasochistic relationship. A hit at festivals, the film was honored with numerous accolades including a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, an Independent Spirit Award (plus two more nominations) and a Golden Globe Award nomination for Maggie Gyllenhaal. Lionsgate released "Secretary" in North America. Shainberg's latest feature film, "Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus," starring Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr., is a fictionalized account of the life of renowned photographer Diane Arbus. It was released in theaters in November 2006 by Time Warner's Picturehouse. In 2004, Shainberg formed Vox3 Films with fellow filmmakers Andrew Fierberg and Christina Weiss Lurie. The company is dedicated to creating independent, adventurous and stimulating cinema that engages with the contemporary world, competes in domestic and international markets, and attracts diverse and mainstream audiences. Vox3's productions include "Game 6" (2005), "Feel" (2006), "Broken English" (2007), "Never Forever" (2007), "Lunch Break" (2008), "Adam" (2009) and "Rage" (2009). Shainberg also served as Executive Producer on Rachel Boynton's IDA Award-winning documentary "Our Brand Is Crisis" (2005). In addition to his feature work, Shainberg has worked as principal director at one of advertising's fastest growing production companies, Lunch. Over the years, he directed numerous television commercials, including high-profile spots for Time Warner, Chanel Perfume and Miller Beer. Moreover, Shainberg has been a guest lecturer at the USC School of Film and Television, Columbia School of Cinema and the American Film Institute (AFI). »

Gerald T. "Jerry" Olson (topic): Executive Producer Gerald Olson has thirty feature films and an equal number of television productions to his credit. Olson was drawn to the medium as a child in San Francisco, when his father, who had a passion for the films of such artists as Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut and Federico Fellini, would take him to the theater. In high school, together with several friends who owned an eight millimeter camera, Olson started making movies. After graduation, he promptly enrolled in film school at San Francisco State University (SFSU). Olson moved to Los Angeles immediately after graduating from SFSU with a degree in Film Production, hoping to build a career in film. Within three months, he was a Runner with Martin Tahse Productions at ABC; one week later he was promoted to Production Assistant. Olson obtained his initial industry experience working on children's television movies and feature films produced by industry legend Roger Corman. Quickly rising through the production ranks, he was serving as a First Assistant Director at age 25. Soon after, he was admitted to the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and served as an Assistant Director on the "Buck Rogers" television series. Following a period with Universal's television department, Olson was called back to the world of indie features when veteran producer Max J. Rosenberg hired him to produce the low-budget horror film "Bloody Birthday." He soon moved on to a number of other films as Line Producer or Production Manager. After serving as Associate Producer on "Repo Man" (1984), Olson became Director of Production at HBO, where he supervised a slate of television series and movies produced in Canada, Australia and the U.K. While completing a film called "Fortress" (1993), he accepted the position of Vice President of Production at New Line Cinema. In addition to supervising the studio's entire production slate, Olson directly produced one film per year, including "The Hidden" (1987), which received the Best Film Award at both the Sitges Film Festival in Spain in 1987 and the Avoriaz Film Festival in France in 1988. Since leaving New Line, he has worked as a Producer for numerous studios and television networks in the U.S. and abroad. Olson's many credits include "House Party" (1990), "Rapid Fire" (1992), "Dumb & Dumber" (1994), Danielle Steel's "The Ring" (1996), "Goodbye Lover" (1998), "Johnny Tsunami" (1999), "Christmas in the Clouds" (2001), "The Rundown" (2003), "Her Best Move" (2007) and "Shredderman Rules" (2007). »

IIFF San Francisco Bay Area

The Institute for International Film Financing (IIFF) is an innovative, independent social-impact organization that endeavors to bridge the gap between the worlds of filmmaking and finance for the benefit of all stakeholders – including the public at large.

Founded by Thomas Trenker in 2003 and headquartered in San Francisco, IIFF has chapters in the Bay Area, New York City, New England, Florida, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, London, the Pacific Northwest, the Lower Midwest, the Southwest and the Great Lakes Region.

Help launch or run an IIFF chapter in your area! We make it easy and worthwhile. Email the chapter development team and tell us about yourself. Or join our online community at http://forum.filmfinancing.org to keep in touch with a growing number of filmmakers and financiers.
