"Ft. George G. Meade: The Growth of a Regional Economic Powerhouse"
Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) is a process which the Department of Defense uses to reorganize its base structure or military towns so that they can more effectively support our forces. Maryland, and specifically, Anne Arundel and Howard Counties Counties, fared exceptionally well in the 2005 BRAC Process, lending additional momentum toward enhancing Anne Arundel County’s diversified, and knowledge based economy. The BRAC decisions, when executed, will help underpin an exceptional quality of life for our citizens while increasing Anne Arundel County’s prominent role in providing the technology required for the security of our nation. Conservatively, current estimates place the direct, indirect, and induced jobs being created in Anne Arundel County in conjunction with BRAC, in the range of 9,000 to 14,000 jobs through the next six plus years, and it must be noted that a significant percentage of them are in high technology and pay extremely well.
About the Speaker: Mr. Kent Menser is currently the Executive Director of the Howard County BRAC Office and Chairman of the Howard County BRAC/Fort Meade Growth Task Force. Additionally, he is Deputy Coordinator of the Fort Meade Regional Growth Management Committee (RGMC). Prior to joining Howard County Government, Kent served a twenty seven year career in the US Army, to include assignments as an Aviator and Armor officer in Germany, Viet Nam, Korea and the United States. His final assignment was as the Commander of Fort Meade from 1990 to 1993. Since his retirement with the rank of Colonel, he has worked as a leadership and management consultant to the Croatian Minister of Defense, Vice President of a small computer manufacture and as an Account Executive with SAS, a large business intelligence software company. He and his wife, Arlene, have been residents of Columbia for 17 years.
