The Songs of Greece - A musical journey from antiquity to the 21st century

Featuring the Kymata Band

February, 23, 2007; 7:30pm

A rare opportunity to experience a live performance of Greek music that spans centuries. On Friday, February 23rd, Bay Area Classical Harmonies and the Pro Arts Gallery present the Kymata Band. Kymata will take you on a musical journey through time and place, beginning in Ancient Greece and ending in Modern Greece. They will demonstrate the lineage of contemporary Greek music, exploring the most influential time periods in Greek history and how they each affected the musical traditions of Greece. The program will include the earliest known composition, found on the Epitaph of Seikilos that dates back to c. 200 BC, a song celebrating the coming of spring from the Byzantine period, a patriotic song spurring on the Greek Revolution, and songs of the Rebetic tradition, often referred to as Greek Blues. Explanations and visual presentations will enhance the musical component of the concert. They will conclude the program with a sampling of contemporary Greek music where the audience will be able to identify familiar patterns and sounds from the past.

Kymata is lead by George Mylordos on Bouzouki, with Kosta Papamichael in vocals, guitar and dumbec and Katerina Clambaneva on vocals. The band has been a fixture in the bay area’s Greek community since 1994, and has featured a number of musicians through the years. Kymata was featured on KQED’s Spark and a video clip can be viewed a here: http://www.kqed.org/arts/people/spark/profile.jsp?id=4569

In 2006 a partnership was formed between the ProArts Gallery and Bay Area Classical Harmonies (BACH). They each felt it was important to cross artistic genres and expose their patrons to a unique experience where several senses were engaged at a time. Thus, the Last Friday of the Month Concert series was created. BACH, a non-profit organization, has been dedicated to the presentation of fine classical music in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and is now expanding into presenting world music.

Called by some "the most versatile group in the Bay Area," BACH's impressive range of repertoire has included cantatas, symphonies and masses. The Opera division, incorporating stage professionals and up-and-comers, first performed at the Julia Morgan Center for the Arts, presenting a concert version of Mozart's "Le Nozze di Figaro" in December 2000. Since its inception in 1998 by graduate and undergraduate students of the Music Department of UC Berkeley, BACH has cultivated young musical talent through the performance of great classical works for audiences in the Bay Area and beyond. The group attained non-profit status in May 2002, promoting professionalism and providing tax benefits to its donors.
