This training workshop is designed for anyone interested in serving as a contest judge, or chief judge, or anyone interested in competing - learn what the judges are looking for! Our goal is to provide the best trained Judges, Chief Judges and Contestants possible to all of our speech contests!
What to expect - syllabus for the workshop
Judges Training:
•Introduction to Judging Contests
• Ethical Standards and Qualities of a Judge
• Barriers to Objectivity
• Prepare to watch a Tall Tales Contest (discuss the ballots) and actually watch a contestant give a Tall Tale
• Guided Activity (group evaluation of Speaker #1)
• Watch 2nd and 3rd Speaker (judge using actual ballots -- use 1 minute timing like in a real contest)
• Discussion amongst participants and score contest with workshop participants' results
• Prepare to watch a Table Topics Contest (discuss the ballots) and actually watch a contestant give a Table Topic
• Guided Activity (group evaluation of Speaker #1)
• Watch 2nd and 3rd Speaker (judge using actual ballots -- use 1 minute timing like in a real contest)
• Discussion amongst participants and score contest with workshop participants' results
