If graduation from design school is just around the corner, this is an event you need to attend. Gain tips and advice about a variety of useful topics such as portfolio organization, best practices in freelance design, and what to put on a resume. Specific information about how to prepare for the annual AIGA Detroit Student Portfolio Review will also be shared.

The afternoon will offer a series of presentations followed by a panel discussion with local design professionals. It's never too early to start making connections and planning for your new role as a professional designer.

1:10-2:10 Freelance Best Practices with freelance designer Jane Delancy and illustrator Chris Burke

Jane DeLancey is the principal and owner of DeLancey Design, founded in 1984. DeLancey Design, Ann Arbor, MI, designs materials for all sorts of marketing needs for small to medium-size businesses. From web site development and design to trade show booth design plus lots of logos and brochures in between. When needed for a client's project DeLancey Design hires coders, photographers, videographers, writers, illustrators, printers, etc. She has been contracted by over 100 clients and worked on over a thousand projects.

For a brief spell Jane worked at Colorbök Paper Products as their Design Director and senior illustrator. Before graduating from the U-M School of Art with a BFA she attended California College of Arts (Oakland) and Art Center College of Design (Pasadena).

2:20-3:30 Portfolio Preparation, Resume Tips, and Interviewing 101 with educator and designer Rebecca Tegtmeyer and designer Elise Androkites

Rebecca Tegtmeyer graduated from NC State University’s College of Design with a Master’s in Graphic Design. Before attending graduate school she interned at Willoughby Design Group followed by Kuhn & Wittenborn before working at Hallmark Cards Inc. for seven years in Kansas City. At Hallmark she had various roles that primarily involved managing product development and designers in merchandising, marketing, and in-house communications.

Currently Rebecca is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design in the Department of Art, Art History, & Design at Michigan State University and is an active member of AIGA (the professional associate for design). She has served on the board as Education Director for the AIGA Detroit Chapter over the past two years.

Elise Androkites received her BFA a with a concentration in Graphic Design from Michigan State University. Currently she is a designer at Redhead Design Studio in Lansing.

3:40-4:45 Designer Panel Discussion with recent design graduates. They will share their stories about how they landed their current jobs.
